Cry Freedom
1. Who was your favorite character from the film? Why?
My
favorite character from the film of course it is the main character Steve Biko.
First because I really like Denzel Washington as an actor, and his
interpretation in the film of Biko it is really astonishing, the personage he
built as Steve Biko is quite fascinating.
Also
what I read about Biko´s biography it got me quite absorbed, for all he did for
the black struggle during the apartheid. How he understand the importance of a
Black Consciousness, that it was big deal the need to put in value the black
culture and the need to do something and not just feel sorry as a part of the
dominated group. I think, part of this was caught and showed and the film by
this character.
I
also liked this character because I think that he was well represented, for
sure it is a movie not a historical document, but a good work was done still.
2.
What was your favorite scene from the film? Why?
My
favorite parts of the film it was the trial, more than all, for the speech that
Biko gave. With the words he used he delivered such a message of strength to continue
with the fight and not to fall into the knees for loose the white power,
neither to provoke violence with no sense. Also, I think it was an infliction
point, which showed that the revolution was needed because thought the white system
everything would have stayed in the same way.
3. How does the film differ from the other
films? Use the article from The Guardian to help you
First, I think this film has something in similar with
“Goodbye Bafana”, because both movies are built from the perspective of a white
man that changes his mind by the interaction of an iconic black leader. Also,
that despite the major personage (in reference to his impact on the real
history) it is a black leader, the principal character of the movie it is a
white.
Despite what I have said already, the differences with
the rest of the movies consist especially that Biko did belong to the AMC, and
his story was kind of leave apart. Another differences, it that shows others
beyond the AMC that had a big impact in the end of the apartheid, Biko and his Black Consciousness were and are
important.
